On August 22nd, I moved to Richmond, Indiana and settled in my house at Bethany Theological Seminary. It took two trips to get everything into my room…the second trip was for all my books! I only brought a bookshelf full of books with me, not my entire library. My roommate has already suggested parsing down my library and investing in a Kindle. I am a book dragon but an inquiry into Kindles might have to be done. Sigh
The first week was eventful and uneventful at the same time. Classes didn’t start till Thursday which was one class. I am still working on how to spend my free time, but I did secure a work study position as a research assistant so that should help me regulate my time.
I met my roommates and God has one again blessed me with wonderful people. We’ve already had a handful of conversations about theology and other cool jazz. Even though we disagree to some degree on theology, we respect each other, and they are already making me think about some beliefs and ideas I have never heard of before. I look forward to growing with them this next year.
I met everyone else in the Pillars and Pathways Residence Scholarship on Wednesday during our scholarship’s orientation. They are all wonderful people, and again, I look forward to having conversations with them and growing with them. One of them likes to bake and gave out their baked goods! My house already received bagels!!! Which were good! Again, God has continued to bless me with kind people.
First day of class, we had our opening joint convocation with Earlham School of Religion. We had a service where the sermon was on Romans 12:2 (this verse reminds me of a youth gathering my youth group attended many years ago). The preacher emphasized to us that we had permission from God to be different and to let our study transform us. He even said that if you started seminary and did not change at all at the end then you have done a disservice to yourself. I took that sentiment to heart as I want to transform and to grow in my time at Bethany and not be the same Nicky that I entered in as.
After the convocation, my first class was in the evening for three hours. It is a poetry workshop class, and I think the class will be enjoyable and beneficial.
That was my first week! I will enter in a normal week routine this upcoming week where I will have two classes a week. Prayers and thoughts are appreciated for me as I continue my journey in higher education! Thank you for reading and have a blessed day!
I'm so happy that you had a great first week! I can't wait to hear more about your time in grad school and how it continues to shape you into your best self ❤
