Hello! Coming at y’all with week two at Bethany Theological Seminary. This week was a full normal week of classes.
At my Applied Storytelling class, I learned about how humans are wired for stories and how narratives help/harm individuals and society. I also learned about the theory of “scripts” where people learn scripts that help them function in society specifically how to act and what to expect. For example, when ordering food at McDonald’s, there are certain expectations and results that will occur 95% of the time. It was a very interesting first class, and I looking forward to learning more about storytelling and its practical application.
On Wednesday, I helped a retired professor from Earlham School of Religion pack up her house. We had lovely conversation, and I am sad that she is leaving not only because she was very knowledgeable and nice but because she taught the Writing Midrash class. Hopefully, I will be able to take the class as an independent study.
That morning as well, I helped lead the first chapel as is tradition for the Student Leadership Team at Bethany. Being part of the SLT, I will be able to help plan fun activities for the PPRS program.
I also started my work study position as a research assistant. It is a lot of reading and researching, but it is flexible and I can determine my own hours most of the time. So, I am looking forward to it as it will further hone my research skills and I am sure I will learn a great deal from my boss and the project itself.
Poetry class was enlightening as I wrote a poem that I actually like that wasn’t a haiku. So small wins, small wins.
On the friends front, I went to see Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with my roommates. I was kind of disappointed by the movie but spent good time with my roommates. With another seminarian in my scholarship program, we checked out an ultimate frisbee group will be joining them for some weekly frisbee.
Besides Bethany activities this week, I went back to Ohio to go to the Renaissance Festival with my Capital friends and then the Greek Festival at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral with my old roommates.
Prayers and thoughts are appreciated for me as I continue my journey in higher education! Thank you for reading and have a blessed day!
